You tried to open your eyes, but you couldn't. Your veins felt like ice. Better than feeling like the room was 140 degrees.

Slowly, you managed to pry your heavy eyelids up enough to see the pretty brunette sitting cross-legged at the end of the bed.

“W-what happened?” you tried to speak, but it came out as more of a croak.

The girl shrugged. “He froze you.” She buttered the roll in her hand and took a huge bite.

“Who?” you managed to make the word understandable.

She spoke around the food in her mouth. “Loki. Duh.” She held up a glass with some sort of liquid in it. “Need a drink?”

You nodded and managed to push yourself to a sitting position. The wound in your abdomen, you suddenly realized, barely hurt at all anymore. You accepted the drink, which turned out to be water, and then tried conversation again. “How long have I been out?”

“Two, maybe three days.” She took the cup and set it back on the tray. “I'm Darcy, by the way.”

You squinted and managed to get your brain to work again. Way too much fog in there. “Three days?”

Darcy nodded and took another bite of the roll. “I told you, he froze you. Although, that worked out great for me. No dungeons. He's letting me keep an eye on you.”

You pushed some really greasy hair from your face and shook your head. Darcy was strange. “Where did you even come from?”

She pulled a device out of her jacket pocket and waved it in the air. “Followed this. I should know better than to mess with Jane's stuff. First time it malfunctioned, she found herself a boyfriend. No such luck.”

“You're awake.” Loki's voice came from the doorway and you and Darcy both turned to look at him.

Darcy waved her roll at him. “Hey, there, Loco.”

He scowled at her and descended two steps onto the main floor of the room. “Are you well?” He asked you. “No ill effects from what happened, I hope.”

You rubbed your eyes and nodded. “I think I'm fine. I had a fever, right? And that's when you froze me?”

He nodded. “Apologies. It was a very aggressive illness, and I had no desire to watch you suffer further.”

“How romantic.” Darcy rolled her eyes.

Yeah. It kind of was.

Wait. No. Ew. You couldn't fall for the bad guy. Not even if he had saved your life. No way. No how. Get yourself together.

“Um...thanks.” You tried to sound nonchalant. It came out more as hesitant than anything else.

“If you need to freshen up, I'm sure Darcy can show you to a washroom. She might as well do something, if she must stay.”

Darcy stuffed the end of the roll into her mouth. “I am doing something. I'm eating. Besides, you're the one who won't let me leave. It's your own fault.”

Had you missed something extremely important? Because it felt like you had.

Loki turned to her. “I like Jane, but I don't trust her. Besides, she also believes I'm...” he looked back to you and then waltzed away toward the door. “You know, Darcy. I'll be back in an hour. There are clean garments in the closet.”

Yeah. You had definitely missed something. Those two had a history. From the sound of it, a long one. Oh, well, you would roll with the punches.

“He's such a snob,” Darcy mumbled. “I should just tase him and get it over with.”

Taser. That sounded like a familiar story. You didn't know why.

“Alright, well, you do need a shower – no offense – so let me show you where you can get cleaned up.” Darcy hopped off the bed and offered you a hand.

You took it, since you hadn't been on your feet since the...incident. You weren't sure if your legs would hold you. Thankfully, you were stronger than you thought. Only a little wobble as you got your sea legs back.

A shower had been the last thing on your mind, but it felt so good once you were under the warm water. There were about fifty different kinds of soap to choose from, and you picked up the one that smelled like roses. You hadn't ever had a shampoo that “fancy” before.

A rack of towels were waiting when you went to get out of the shower, and you couldn't remember if they had been there when you got in.

Well, that was disturbing. What if someone had come in while you were showering and...seen you. Oh, you hoped it hadn't been Loki. That would have been so embarrassing.

You practically sprinted to the closet and shut yourself inside. It was big enough, to say the least. It might as well have been a whole other room.

You pulled out a pair of jeans and a green t-shirt and tossed them on over your own – thank you very much – bra and underwear. Because no creep was going to buy you things like that. Or, at least, you weren't going to wear them. You smiled and went searching for a brush.

Loki gave a smirk and leaned back against the wall outside your bedroom. You were doing better, that was certain.

He still didn't like the look of the bruises covering your body, but the men that had supplied them were no longer able to hurt anyone. That gave him a certain measure of happiness.

You were as perfect as he thought. Even with the bruises, you were beautiful. Curves in all the right places and eyes of the most beautiful (e/c) he had ever seen. Just as he remembered, and better.

Your maturity from teenager to adult had only served to heighten the perfection he already knew. It had not been a mistake to rescue you from those men.

It had been the best thing he had ever done. He would never regret it.

And he would never let you go.
First attempt at a fanfic which is turning out to be longer than expected. So Darcy is here now, evidently, still not exactly sure what part she plays in all this, but I guess we'll figure it out, right?
